Food Waste Flicks
As I have discussed before, food waste is a problem that has played a role in human life for centuries. While ancient processes like gleaning were helpful in towns with small populations, our expanding world will need to adjust these models to face the new food waste challenges stemming from population growth. Before we can create a solution, however, we must educate people about the problem itself. Luckily, leading activists in the food waste battle have come up with new ways to share the message.
Just this week, the documentary Wasted! The Story of Food Waste was released, which exposes the horrors of food waste through the eyes of several famous chefs such as Bourdain, Dan Barber, Mario Batali, Massimo Bottura, and Danny Bowien-- all of whom have taken a personal interest in the issue. While this documentary is still on the top of my to-watch list, I recently watched a similar documentary called Just Eat It, which explores the effect of food waste in our society by following a couple through their 6-month journey of only eating food waste. I not only enjoyed learning about this couple's challenge, but also felt inspired to affect change within my immediate communities.
I highly recommend watching either Wasted! or Just Eat It (or both!) during your next movie night, to learn more about how you can help solve one of the world's leading problems: the food waste problem.
