Donate on Thanksgiving, Volunteer Every Other Day-- And Here's Why!
The holiday of giving is quickly approaching! As my favorite day of the year, I was researching how I could volunteer next Thursday and was surprised to see that my help might not be best utilized through hands-on work.
While you might be thinking that volunteering on Thanksgiving is a perfect way to spend the day, the problem is that a large portion of the population agrees with you! The holiday season is a time when food banks and shelters see the greatest influx of first-time volunteers, who require training at an already busy time. While the eagerness to volunteer is never a cause for complaint, it is important to ensure that your efforts are put to the best use.
This Thanksgiving, make sure to give your local food bank a call to see what help they need. Oftentimes, they will answer with a need for food donations in order to fulfill the great demand they face during the holidays. If you happen to find that they don't need your help right now, don't fret! Shelters find that their need for volunteers sees a drastic increase after the holiday season, so make it your New Year's resolution to volunteer, extending the holiday of giving all year long!
I hope your Thanksgiving is full of merriment and good food, which I encourage you to share by volunteering in any way you can.
