Meatless Mondays: An Old Solution for a New Problem!
If you have been following the news recently, you might have seen that Bill de Blasio announced that the Department of Education is implementing meatless Monday meals in 15 Brooklyn schools. These schools are acting as a test before expanding to include more boroughs in the initiative, and even more days of the week!
While new to public schools, the concept of "Meatless Mondays" dates all the way back to World War 1. In order to conserve resources, the U.S. Food Administration encouraged people to cut meat from their diets one meal a week. Now, with an increased awareness of the health benefits of vegetarian diets, this initiative will help to both conserve resources and teach kids how to live a healthy lifestyle at a younger age — a win-win!
