Lilly Pulitzer: Gleaning with Style
If you weren't already convinced that gleaning is AMAZING from our last post, you will be happy to learn that gleaning is both eco-friendly and stylish!
While looking at citrus-patterned dresses to complement my new obsession with making citrus powder, I stumbled upon the history of the brand Lilly Pulitzer. Much to my surprise, I discovered that the brand actually originates from a business that reduced food waste!
So how does this all connect? Back in 1959, a young Lilly Pulitzer moved to a house in Palm Beach that had an abundance of citrus groves. As the family was not be able to eat all of their fruit, Lilly opened a juice stand to put the extra fruit to good use! She quickly became known for her brightly-patterned dresses (which she wore to conceal the juice stains!) and began to sell them- creating the brand we know and love today.
So not only did Lilly Pulitzer help reduce food waste through selling excess fruit, she also brought elegance and style to gleaning- attributes that are important in advocating for this important cause! What an inspiration!
